Yoga and Black Healing

It's no surprise that yoga has become more popular with Black women. While yoga is traditionally associated with white women in the past, Ebony published a 1975 article that focused on the growing number of Black women doing yoga. Williford says yoga can be used to reduce stress and build community. Yoga's holistic nature can help lower the risk of developing chronic illnesses. Below are just a handful of ways yoga can help Black woman.

Recent interviews with 20 Black women were conducted. They came from diverse backgrounds and shared their experiences with yoga. These women are encouraging Black women to exercise and find peace within. This could be due to increasing racial tension as well as the pressure that comes with being Black in a predominantly white society. However, there is still much more to be done to promote yoga and make it accessible to a wider audience.

Black yoga instructors promote yoga. They also help create spaces that are culturally sensitive. Many of these communities of black people are living in difficult economic and social situations. As an example, the Litehouse Wellness project in Dallas offers classes at the Pan African Connection. The "Black Male Yoga Initiative" was founded by Changa Bell in 2015. Numerous Black women have begun to incorporate yoga into the lives of their families. This will allow for more participation if the women receive the appropriate training.

Satya is known for her work in creating inclusive and diverse yoga environments. In addition, she has helped to foster a movement that promotes diversity in the yoga industry. She founded the Black Yogic Teachers Alliance in 2016, a non-profit organization that offers scholarships, training, teaching opportunities, and other benefits. In addition, she launched the Yoga Green Book, an online directory of Black yoga teachers and studios. The website provides information and a network for BIPOC instructors. A third of American Black adults practice yoga.

Yoga has been proven to be a powerful way to increase diversity and healing health disparities. The rise in popularity of yoga has led to the inclusion of Black instructors. More than 36 million people practice yoga in America, with 85 percent being white. The lack of a diverse community of yoga instructors in the United States is not a surprise.
